The future of fashion must be sustainable. Our magazine is intended to be a resource for consumers to discover more about the methods and materials used to make their clothes. Scientific innovation is driving forward the development of sustainable vegan materials. Here is a quick round up of plant-based materials:
Lyocell
This material is made from cellulose from wood pulp, mostly from eucalyptus trees. Eucalyptus trees grow without irrigation and hardly any pesticides, it is a biodegradable fabric, and its production does not have a large impact on the environment. Leftover water is recycled, and no toxic chemicals are used when making it.
Qmonos
This material, a synthetic spider silk, is biodegradable, strong, flexible and lightweight. Spiders are not harmed in the making of Qmonos.
Hemp
Hemp comes from the stem of the hemp plant. It is is a great environmentally friendly option, as it does not require pesticides, and does not use much water or land to grow.
Orange fiber
Orange fiber is created using by-products from citrus fruits, from citrus cellulose. It can also be blended with silk and cotton.
Pineapple leather
Piñatex is fruit leather made from pineapples grown in the Philippines. Its production does not involve much water, and no harmful substances are released.
Vegea
Vegea makes leather from grape marc, the bits discarded in the process of making wine. A wine-coloured material is produced in a method that does not involve the harming of animals or toxic chemicals.
