WtR is a contemporary lifestyle brand that draws inspiration from the contrast between structure and spontaneity, fusing form and function to create versatile pieces with real world purposefor real women. We spoke to Esin Ogur Kocali; Owner/Designer of WtR to get a closer look inside the brand.
How did WtR begin?
The brand is owned by trusted design and production house of world leading retailers Aster Tekstil. With access to a myriad of skilled craftsman and superior fabrics, we wanted to create our own luxury brand WtR.
Have you always been interested in fashion and design?
Yes, I always have been and love experimenting with different fabrics and shapes. I learnt every aspect of the business within the company; from production to buying and selling. It gave me a core understanding in order to create the WtR brand where we wanted craftsmanship to be the key element.
What have been the highest and lowest points on your journey so far?
Opening our first WtR flagship store in London’s Notting Hill was such high for me. I think my lowest point is when I realised that there are not enough hours in the day sometimes. My work and personal life can be a huge juggling act as I have three children under the age of ten!
What was the inspiration behind your latest collection?
Each collection takes inspiration from a city. We take influence from their architectural, national and cultural references and combine them to make pieces that flatter the female form in sensual silhouettes.
Do you ever struggle to stay inspired?
No, there are so many inspirations in the world and I have a strong creative team behind me; if anything we have too many ideas!
Where is your go-to meeting spot?
Our main office is just off Charlotte Street in London, so I am really spoilt for choice for great local coffee shops and eateries.
How would you describe your customer base?
She has a desire for timeless, purposeful pieces. She is sophisticated with a keen sense of style.
Is there anyone you would love to see wearing your designs?
Kate Winslet and Julianne Moore.
What are the morals you run your brand by?
Uncompromising emphasis on quality, we are always seeking finest materials to be used.
Do you have a mentor?
I am unable to pinpoint one sole person in particular, I am inspired by different people and by my life experiences.
What apps keep you sane?
WhatsApp has a means of fast communication, while Spotify helps with my varied taste in music.
If you could only wear one piece from your collection, what would it be and why?
I love to wear silk dresses from the collection, I travel a lot and they are easy to wear from day to evening
What’s the biggest style mistake you’ve ever made?
Bell Bottom Trousers!
Is there another designer whose work you particularly admire?
I love certain collection pieces from various designers so it is too difficult to choose just one!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
'If you really want to do something, you'll find a way. If you don't, you'll find an excuse.' Jim Rohn.
What drew you to Wolf & Badger?
I love the concept of Wolf & Badger and it is a great platform for emerging brands like WtR.
Where do you see the brand in 5 years?
We have a global vision and aim to be stocked in premium department stores and independents boutiques around the globe.
