Style notes

Inspired by the Japanese 'shamoji', a large flat spoon to traditionally serve rice, we have created our own version with a large head to effectively sweep and stir grains without mashing them. The handle with a slight curve allows for easy gripping and is ever so tactile.

We also use them in the kitchen to toss vegetables in a roasting tray. It's a lovely piece that is versatile to use and to take straight to the serving table.

Made by Daniel (our artisan in Mtwara, Tanzania), this piece has been beautifully carved and is a perfect gift for a foodie. Some of the paddles feature a unique two-toned natural grain, showcasing the raw natural beauty of African Blackwood.

Your purchase supports job creation and helps to keep the tradition of wood carving in the Makonde tribe alive.

Sustainability guarantees

Is the manufacturing process of your collection free from child labour and human trafficking, are all workers paid a living wage, and is the factory compliant with all local environmental regulations?

Is your collection made exclusively in your studio or by an artisan collective of fewer than 10 people? There should be a focus on preserving artisanal production methods and skilled workers in order to qualify.

Are all items in your collection made with at least 90% plant-based ingredients or materials, e.g. tencel, cotton, hemp, modal, coconut, pineapple? (There can be NO leather or animals based products in your collection for you to receive this icon).

QÄSA QÄSA

We are a lifestyle store offering ethical homewares and gifts for sustainable living. Each item is hand-crafted by skilled artisans in East Africa and comes with its own special story.

QÄSA QÄSA stems from the Amharic (Ethiopian) word to mean inspire | awake | motivate. Inspired by functional design and the shapes, tastes and culture of Tanzania, we have created a collection of wooden pieces for the kitchen and home using locally sourced indigenous wood, whilst keep alive age old techniques.

Each piece is one of a kind and has been designed to inspire the curious.
