This item is held by The Giphoscope in Italy

The Eugen Sandow Giphoscope displays a 24 frame animated GIF excerpted from Edison Company footage, recorded in 1894, of the German pioneering bodybuilder Eugen Sandow.

Please have a look to our profile video to see the Eugen Sandow Giphosocope in action.

His resemblance to the physiques found on classical Greek and Roman sculpture was no accident, as he measured the statues in museums and helped to develop “The Grecian Ideal” as a formula for the “perfect physique.” Sandow built his physique to the exact proportions of his Grecian Ideal, and is considered the father of modern bodybuilding, as one of the first athletes to intentionally develop his musculature to predetermined dimensions.According to vaudeville historian Joe Laurie, Jr. Sandow – who was managed by Flo Ziegfeld – was ‘the greatest of the strong men and who received the most publicity’.

The Sandow Giphoscope has been entirely handcrafted in Italy. It has a mono-component holding frame, black velvet details to avoid friction, and a black painted wood base.

Meet The Designer

The Giphoscope is the world first motion picture frame, created by designers Alessandro Scali and Marco Calabrese.
The Giphoscope turns GIFs and digital videos into an analog piece of art and design, handcrafted in Italy with devotion.
Each Giphoscope is a unique object, an exclusive limited edition of one.

Based on the Mutoscope created by Herman Casler in the 1890s, the Giphoscope follows the same principle as the flip book: a sequence of images on a Rolodex-style wheel with a handle that you can turn to 'flip' them.
Each Giphoscope is a unique object, an exclusive limited edition of one.
