One of a set of six finest English bone china mugs featuring Jane's original Biro drawings from her series 'In Homage to the Last Great Carnivores of Eurasia'. Hand decorated and made in Stoke-on-Trent to the highest standard by prestigious ceramic designers and manufacturers The New English, each mug has been specifically designed by Jane as a small piece of art in functional form, incorporating symbolism and a "little surprise inside!". Featuring an elegant handle, these contemporary yet timeless designs create unique conversation pieces as well as a beautiful gift for someone special. A Russian brown bear walks across the surface of the mug with a rich tapestry of symbolism woven through his fur, including an interpretation of artist Anselm Kiefer’s attic. An old soviet WWII poster of a child in his mother's arms was used as inspiration to illustrate the harsh Russian winters faced by female bears and their cubs, a time when hibernating brown bears are most at risk from mankind. This stunning design also features a smaller repeat image on the mug back, creating a sense of movement as if the bear has walked through the mug handle. Inside the mug is a larger portrait of Mummy Bear and Baby Bear. Mummy Bear stares plaintively into the mug user's eyes as they drink from the mug.

Meet The Designer

Artist Jane Lee McCracken constructs intricate multi-layered Biro drawings and sculptures and installations incorporating her drawings. Born in Edinburgh, her work is impassioned by childhood memoirs, fairy tales, forests, wildlife, films and documentaries. Along with her continuing interest in war and loss Jane's artwork is both beautiful and representational of life's brutal reality. Her meticulous drawings take several months to research and make, and incorporate complex and symbolic drawing layers. Her working process often includes photographing television screens as films or documentaries are played. This produces inspirational images to work from, giving her drawings a cinematic quality. Jane's exquisite print and fine English bone china collection of plates and mugs 'In Homage to the Last Great Carnivores of Eurasia' celebrate the beauty and majesty of threatened and endangered carnivores across the Eurasian continent, whilst highlighting the challenges they face in an uncertain world. China plates and mugs are made in Stoke-on-Trent to the highest standard by prestigious ceramic designers and manufacturers The New English. Each plate design is a limited signed and hand numbered edition of 200. Sumptuous archival pigment prints in editions of 50 per design, beautifully reproduced from Jane's original Biro drawings are made by one of the very best printmakers in the industry.
