Nail Fall/Winter Trends With Senior Fashion Editor Dale Chong

I recently referred to myself as a sartorial magpie, based on the myth of the Thieving Magpie, which was known for being attracted to shiny, glimmering objects. For context, I said this in a conversation about jewelry. However, I would also apply that idea to the eye-catching garments in my wardrobe. Well, somewhat.

When I first heard of the concept of “dopamine dressing” earlier this year, I thought to myself, “Well, obviously that makes sense.” But lo and behold, my daily fall fashion choices often resorted to foolproof classics. You know the ones: vintage jeans, easy T-shirts, classic cashmere sweaters in neutral hues; the list goes on. It’s easy to fall into a pattern when it comes to putting together your outfits, and even more so when it’s cold and you’re short on time. This season, however, I’ve been feeling the pull to add a little more intrigue to my ensembles. Blame it on the hot pink hue that’s taken the fashion world by storm or the return of platforms and heels as everyone starts to consider dressing with the act of being seen in mind. The challenge of forming outfits and the outcome has been, to say the least, refreshing.

Nothing truly compares to dressing for yourself, especially during a season like fall. When you’re ready to cast everyday wardrobe basics off to the wayside and reach for your statement pieces, it may be the best season. The weather is no longer broiling hot or humid, and the temperatures have yet to reach frigid levels. This is the time of year when layering becomes key, making it the perfect time to get creative.

I’m not what I personally would consider a sartorial chameleon—or even a maximalist. But in a lot of ways, I suppose I am. With every change in the seasons come a new set of trends. Naturally, some of those said trends make their way into my closet. This season has been particularly interesting, as it felt like this was the year for every sort of trend, from ultra-sexy and feminine, body-hugging corsets and mini skirts to baggy, oversized tops and bottoms. Consider it the clash of the trends (in the best way possible).

In particular, I’ve always loved design-driven fashion. Whether that’s a pair of jeans made with beautiful, luxurious raw denim, a button-down shirt with unexpected details or cutouts, or bright, high-octane dresses or shorts—which, in case you’re wondering, is a sure-fire trend for spring, too.

Fall 2022’s penchant for mix-and-match maximalism makes this time of year particularly great for experimenting with your wardrobe choices. Throw together a western-inspired jacket with a sleek pair of satin pants and timeless black heels. Or, reach for the boldest ensemble you own. If you aren’t sure where to start, you can always go with what you love. The great thing about getting dressed in this season—nay, this era—is there are absolutely no rules.
