The three sisters behind the functional design coat brand, RainSisters, chat their brand's beginnings, its core values, and what success means to them.
Founded in 2018 by sisters Zaiga, Zane and Zanda, RainSisters is a Latvian-born outerwear brand redefining what it means for a coat to be both feminine and functional. What began as a single prototype sewn in a living room has since grown into an internationally recognized brand – yet at its core, RainSisters remains a family-driven story of creativity, craftsmanship, and the belief that every woman deserves to feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable, no matter the weather.
We caught up with the sisters to chat all things RainSisters, from the story of the brand's beginnings to the core values that continue to drive them to create stylish raincoats that inspire confidence.
1
What drove you to create your brand? Where did the idea for it come from?
Zane: It started from a very personal need. Zaiga wanted to wear something waterproof yet feminine when going for long walks with her small kids, and she couldn’t find anything in the market that would particularly interest her. We, three sisters, used to make clothes for ourselves in childhood, and even more – Zaiga had education in the field of pattern making and fabrics. Hence, the first prototype was born in Zaiga’s living room from a store bought soft shell fabric – a fabric that was already well known by her as a functional material for kids outerwear, as well as outdoor and fishing jackets for men, however this fabric was not yet widely applied to women’s clothing.
Zaiga introduced the idea to Zanda who, at the time, had left her architecture career path and had started working as an individual tailor, and to me, a sister with experience in the finance field. Seeing the niche in the market for a feminine yet functional outerwear with qualities of both a coat and a raincoat, the brand RainSisters was created in 2018.

What did the initial process of designing and crafting your products look like? What does the process look like today, and what have the biggest changes been?
Zane: The first coat collection was presented in the local markets and fairs, and the feedback from the first interested customers turned out to be crucial in better understanding the target audience and shaping the product.
All the coat silhouettes and styles are designed by Zanda, and the patterns for sewing are constructed by Zaiga. Very soon, we realized that the floral prints of the fabric express the very soul of the brand and are therefore hard to find, so nowadays all the fabric prints are hand-drawn by Zanda herself. In the first year of operations, we proudly sold 45 coats. Now, we often sell 45 coats per day and have a reliable team that handles the operations.
Zanda: When designing a print or a coat, I follow my intuition and focus on the emotion I want to evoke in our customers. At times, I am drawn to the romantic look, with extra-flowy and voluminous skirts reminiscent of a fairy tale. At other moments, I lean toward darker tones and striking floral patterns that convey a bold, confident energy. Above all, my aim is for our customers to feel beautiful—like the main character in their own story—while remaining comfortable, regardless of the print, cut, or colour.
3
What is your favourite thing about running your brand? Are there any unexpected perks?
Zaiga: My favourite thing is that I can work together with my sisters and I can work in my own rhythm.
Zanda: My favourite thing about running our own business is that it constantly pushes us to evolve—not only professionally, but also personally. Every challenge brings new lessons, shaping our skills and expanding our perspectives. One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is seeing so many incredible people become part of the RainSisters community.
Zane: In addition to what my sisters already mentioned, I also enjoy being invited to guest lectures in schools and to other public speaking events and discussions, to share the experiences of development of RainSisters through eCommerce.

Is there anyone you would love to see wearing your designs?
Zanda: Previously, I would have said that I would love to see some celebrity wearing one of our coats. However, currently I feel that the true magic lies in something far more personal. I want our coats to find their way to women whose lives they can quietly transform—to inspire them, to make them feel more feminine, more beautiful, and more valued. Life brings challenges to all of us, and no coat can solve every problem, but perhaps it can offer a moment of lightness, confidence, and self-celebration. If wearing a RainSisters coat can help someone stand a little taller, smile a little wider, or feel just a bit more like the best version of herself, then I know we have succeeded.
5
What are your brand’s core values, and how do they show through your creative process, your supply chain, and production?
Zanda: At the heart of RainSisters are values that guide every decision we make. We are committed to being environmentally conscious, ensuring that our processes and materials respect the planet we all share. We believe in fair pay and ethical working conditions for everyone involved in bringing our designs to life. Each piece we create is one-of-a-kind and timeless—crafted to outlast fleeting trends and become a lasting part of a woman’s wardrobe. Above all, we see every coat as an opportunity to give something truly special: a piece that inspires women, celebrates their individuality, and makes them feel valued.

How do you measure success for your brand? What does success mean to you?
Zane: RainSisters started as a small family business and has grown to be a fashion brand that is present in large parts of the world. For us, a success would be to become a fashion brand that is known worldwide, so that people would recognize our coats on the streets and would talk highly about them.
Zanda: For me, success is measured not only by our year-to-year growth, but also by the evolution of our designs. It is deeply important that with each new collection, I can proudly say it surpasses the one before it. That constant improvement tells me we are not standing still—we are evolving, pushing boundaries, and exploring new territories beyond our comfort zone.
Zaiga: Success for me is that I can do my work, continue improving my knowledge in the field and offer high quality products for our customers.
