Rethinking The Environmental Impact of Christmas: Sustainable Swaps We Can All Try This Year

| By Little Karma Co. Ltd

As Christmas approaches, the team at Little Karma Co. take us through their favourite swaps for a more sustainable festive season.

Love it or hate it, Christmas is coming and with it the whirlwind of Christmas prep. More and more, both as a company and individuals, the team at Little Karma Co. have moved towards sustainable swaps for the Christmas traditions. Not only does this help everyone in terms of long term savings, but it reduces waste and allows us to minimise the impact celebrations have on the planet.

We know how hectic this time of year can feel, so we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite (and fastest) ways to have a more sustainable Christmas.

1

SWITCH OUT THE CHRISTMAS CRACKERS

Traditionally, crackers can be made from a lot of waste products and they can’t necessarily be recycled.

We’ve been switching our crackers out for sustainable ‘table gifts’ instead. A real game changer this year has been using the Little Karma Co. Advent Set in place of crackers, gifting each person round the table with their one reusable, refillable, and sustainable candle. Bonus points if you write your own terrible jokes to pair with them.

There are also many other alternatives. How about some chocolates? Or, if you’re particularly crafty, why not crochet something for each person? The possibilities are endless, and, in the process of reducing waste, you’re also gifting more consciously. A win-win.

2

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Try setting your Christmas lights on a timer (both inside and out) to turn on only when you’re in to enjoy them. This way, you’re both reducing your energy usage and fully enjoying your festive set up. It also means that you get a very visual reminder of when you’ve set a ‘bedtime’, a great byproduct for a well-rested holiday season. It sounds like a harder set up initially, but once done, you’re sorted for the entire festive season.

Lastly, check which lights you’re using—you can always use your overhead lights less if you prefer to use the Christmas tree lights or candlelight to set yourself up for a festive mood.

3

GIFT MORE SUSTAINABLY

There are so many more sustainable gift ideas out there now than in the past, and a lot of small businesses are striving to make their products as eco-friendly as possible. This was the motivation behind our candle line, driving our founders to create refillable candles which produce less waste and save people money on their repurchases in the long run.

You can find more sustainable gift options online and in store at Wolf & Badger.

4

RENT YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE

Did you know that you can rent your Christmas tree? This means that in the ‘off season’, these trees are returned, cared for, and can spend their year living happily until the next festive season rolls around.

What does this mean? There’s a lot less waste as these trees don’t just die in the New Year like many others. It also means that there’s less plastic usage due to the replacement of artificial trees.

5

RETHINK YOUR GIFT WRAPPING

Not all wrapping paper is recyclable—something that isn’t hugely obvious at first glance. Some paper even has a plastic lining and is destined for the landfill. If wrapping paper is the way you’d like to go this year, keep an eye on what it’s made of and if it can be recycled.

As an alternative, opt for companies that gift wrap your presents for you and offer eco-friendly or sustainable gift wrapping. This is something Little Karma Co. prides itself on, offering packaging options that are as environmentally-friendly as possible, down to the labels which are created from a waste product of sugar cane. As a company, we have consciously selected our gift wrapping materials. We use recycled wrapping paper that is fully recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable; our ribbon is 100% compostable tencel; our tape is 100% plant based and plastic free; and our handwritten gift cards are made with recycled card.

Finally, if in doubt, reuse. Gift bags really do stand the test of time, so if you have any in your home, reuse them to give to others. If they have been used previously, try cutting off the label and cut up some cards instead. Hole punch the card, write your note, and retie it onto the gift bag. Job done!

By making these easy swaps this Christmas, we can help to make a huge difference to our planet. Join us in celebrating Christmas sustainably!
