Black History Month is a time to celebrate the contributions and achievements of Black people throughout history, recognizing their triumphs, struggles and legacies of the African diaspora. In the USA, it is marked through the month of February. It is also a time to reflect on the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting the richness and beauty of African art. As we celebrate Black History Month and approach Valentine's Day, it is important to focus on the themes of romance and rejuvenation. These two concepts play a significant role in our lives and can be embodied through jewellery. We explore the connection between romance and rejuvenation through the lens of a Black-owned Nigerian jewellery brand, DOLA.NG.
The AYABA collection, inspired by the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria, is the epitome of romance and rejuvenation. The Yoruba have a reputation for being the most skilled craftspeople from Africa, working across blacksmithing, leatherworking, glassmaking, and ivory and wood carving. Inhabiting the western part of Africa, they make up a significant part of Nigeria's population. Each piece of jewellery is given a Yoruba name with a powerful meaning, showcasing the cultural significance of the brand. Adéọlá, for example, means The Crown of Wealth. Adéṣẹwà means Beautiful Crown. These pieces not only provide a connection to African heritage but also symbolize the rejuvenation of love and relationships.
Representation of Black-owned brands in the luxury space is crucial, as it provides a platform for African culture to be recognized and appreciated globally. It is a way of preserving cultural heritage and promoting the richness and beauty of African art. Moreover, it helps to support Black businesses, giving them a voice in the global market and creating opportunities for economic growth and empowerment.
Discover the Black-owned brands and Black designers, like Ohema Ohene, bringing culture into their designs and making an impact on the independent scene.
